OriginalNotes: Valley of the Upper Maumee River, v. I (Brant & Fuller, 1889, Madison, WI), p. 321-22: In 1839 emigrated with parents to Perry Twp., Allen County. In 1848 entered shops at Ft. Wayne to serve an apprenticeship as millwright, but never completed it. Being a natural mechanic, he stood at the head wherever he worked. He followed this trade through life. In 1866 he entered the pension office with S. D. Bayless, where he remained until 1869. In March 1852 started on overland route to the gold fields of California, arriving Aug. 10, 1852. He encountered the mining region at mouth of Nelson Creek, and remained until Nov., when he removed to Santa Clara, and returned to Ind. in spring 1853. Member of Masonic order, of Wayne lodge No. 25. He owns 10 1/2 acres land in Perry and 140 acres in Eel River Twp.
