"Photographers of Greencastle, Indiana, 1850-1980" by Eleanor Cammack: She reports that the name originally was Spurgeon [source?].  His wife's uncle, Henry Secrest, was an early prominent lawyer in Greencastle, perhaps the reason the Spurgin's settled there.  Cammack states that they moved to Greencastle in 1852.

He dated this ad as 1857  "HALLOTYPE - The undersigned, proprietors of the Patent Hallotype in and for the following States and Territories are prepared to negotiate with Photograpehrs, Ambrotypists and Daguerreotypists for individual or exclusive rights for the same. By a recent arrangement, the firm of Hall & Gurney has been dissolved and the territories divided as follows." [The list then divides a list of states belonging to J. B. Hall & Co., , 37 Lispenard St., New York. And another list belonging to J. Gurney & Co., 349 Broadway, New York. Indiana is not listed on either list.] "Persons purchasing the right to practice the Hallotype will be furnished with a good printed process for producing negatives, printing, mounting, and coloring, with many useful and practical hints relating to photograpphy. It is not necessary for persons to have personal instruction, as the published formula will enable all to produce good results. For terms apply, by letter or otherwise, as above to the parties owning the State represented as First and Second. It is thought advisable to state that there has been a reduction in the price of rights."  "Hallotype Note: Persons wishing to negotiate for rights to practice the 'Hallotype' in the following States, will address the proprietors, whose names are given below--State of Indiana-Spurgin & Wilson, Greencastle, Putnam county, Ia. [also lists proprietors for NJ, KY, and IL] We would here state, that we wish it distincly understood, that there is no person in any State who has an exclusive agency to dispose of Rights." [Note: at the bottom of the page is an ad for E. Anthony, Daguerreian and Photographic Materials 308 Broadway NY, but it is not clear if it is a separate ad or if the hallotype announcement is part of their ad.

"Photographers of Greencastle, Indiana, 1850-1980" by Eleanor Cammack, 1858 ad for Spurgin mentions "Full instructions given and outfit furnished"  also "after the death of James (1888) there appeared in several issues of the Greencastle Times, and advertisement stating that Spurgin had resumed work again in 'new and elegant rooms.'  In this same notice is the statement that D. M. Spurgin, 'the jeweler can be found in the same place with everything new in his line.' . . . it is believed that the studio continued under the Spurgin name until 1892 when the father, D. M., died."
