OriginalNotes: OTHER:Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Peat, p. 137: Adolphus Van Sickle was professional portraitist active in northern Ind. from late 1840s to early 1870s. We know nothing of his life. He probably came from the East, and after spending about 25 yrs. in northern Ind. left for new fields of activity or died in obscurity in this region. He painted in Goshen in about 1848, soon after appeared in La Porte, for the next decade his movements are uncharted, but then he reappeared at South Bend equipped with the paraphernalia of the new art, photography, and prepared to take likenesses with either brushes and paint or the camera. In South Bend 1868 to 1874. Nothing made by him during those years has been identified, which is surprising because he usually signed and dated his work.
