History of Delaware Co., IN, Chicago: Kingman Bros., 1881, p. 226 write-up and photograph of Thomas S. Neely: In 1831 Moses Neely removed with family to Miami Co., OH and about 1840 to Randolph Co., Ind., settling near the town of Windosor. His family consisted of 4 sons and 5 daughters, of whom Thomas S. and George are the only survivors [George may have been the G. S. Neely affiliated with an early Muncie newspaper--check this connection]. T. S. was engaged in farm work at home, attending the district school in winter, until 18 yrs. Of age when he was apprenticed to blacksmith at Petersburg, PA to learn the trade. He remained with him for nearly 3 yhrs, and having acquire good knowledge of the trade he began to work on his own account, and in 1831, removed with parents to Miami Co., OH. He worked at his trade in Troy, Urbana, and other Ohio towns, and in 1833, returned to his former home in PA and was wedded to Miss Matilda Wierman. He lived in Miami Co. 6 yrs. And in Feb. 1839, came to Mucie. He 1st engaged in the grocery trade, but the town was ssmall and merchants plenty, and he was soon convinced that there was a better opening for the mechanic than the merchant, deciding, therefore, to devote himself to his trade. Engaged in grocery business only about 6 mo. when he helped a wagon-maker. He sold his grocery store and opened a shop, where he was engaged at his trade for more than 20 yrs. He 1st purchased the lot now occupied by the Abbott House, where he had his residence, and at a later date, erected the brick block on Main st., in which the photographic rooms of G. R. Gamble are now located. In this building, Mr. Neely established a daguerreotype gallery, after retiring from work at his trade, and made the 1st pictures in Muncie. As the art of photography became better known, he adopted it, and was the leading photographer of this city until about 15 yrs. Ago when he trasferred the gallery to his son, Lon M., and, since his retirement from this pursuit, he has not been engaged in any active business. [The rest of the bio discusses his community involvement, participation in bringing railroad to Muncie, etc.]
