To help with the cost of schooling and supplement those funds supplied by his father, the 21 yr. old took a part-time job at Estabrooke's American Ferrotypes, a studio advertising its photographs as "Made and delivered in a few minutes, a 3a Tottenham Court Road, corner of Oxford Street." He received a certificate on July 1, 1873, returned to Seymour, Indiana in fall of 1874 where he opened a portrait studio. [Probably Thomas Sherman Estabrooke of Brooklyn. In June 1872 he accepted the agency of the Phoenix Plate Co. in England. He proceeded to London in June to establish in Regent St. the 1st gallery in England devoted exclusively to the production of ferrotypes.
