Obit: James H. Matthews, formerly photographer of Greensburg, d. in Indianapolis on Apr. 23.  For last 20 yrs. or more had battled with weak lungs and with virtually but one lung had successfully carried on his business until pneumonia attacked him and caused his death after illness of 10 days.  Buried in Greenfield, Ohio. Leaves one son, Harry O. Matthews of Greensburg. The work of his hands is in many Decatur Co. homes, attesting his skill and reminding of the artist. He was aged 51 yrs.

Journalist and now editor and proprietor of the Greensburg Daily and Weekly News; b. 21 October 1875 son of James H. and Phoebe W. (Garver) Matthews. Grandson of James Dunlop Matthews and Mary Ann Wilson. James H. Matthews was b. in western Indiana, March 5, 1847 and died in Indianapolis on April 23, 1898. When 17 he began the study of photography in Greenfield, Ohio (where James Dunlop Matthews was born) and followed that art in the Buckeye state until 23 years of age, when he came to Greensburg, Indiana. He carried on the photographing business in this and various other locations in different states, for 28 years, and then removed to Indianapolis, where he spent his last days. He was one of the leading photographers of the state, his artistic talent and skill in his profession winning him prestige. On the 14th of October 1874 occurred the marriage of James H. Matthews and Phoebe W. Garver, who resided in Greensburg, Indiana, and to them was born Harry O. Harry spent the first four years of this life in Greensburg and then accompanied his parents to other parts of this and other states. At age 10 he entered a printing office in Seymour, IN, to learn printing trade. [gives much more history about Harry O.'s career]
