NEWSPAPERS: PERIODICALS: Bulletin of Photography, Aug. 20, 1913, p. 250: Peter Platter celebrated 88th birthday on July 31. He is oldest photographer in the State in active business, having been there for 52 yrs. Bulletin of Photography, 22 Sept. 1915, p. 334 "Veteran Photographer is Active at Advanced Age of 90 Years" [copied from Seymour paper, 21 Aug.] Peter Platter, who believes he holds the title of being oldest active photographer in Middle West and 2nd Oldest in US just celebrated 90th birthday. Head of firm of 3 generations of photographers & still handles camera. Others are son Herbert & grandson Frank Platter. During last few years he has divided the responsibilities of the studio but may be found there at almost any time during the day. Mr. Platter b. in Ripley Co., IN; [shortened version of article in 29 Sept. 1915 issue, p. 410] OTHER:According to 2/25/1993 letter from Elizabeth Rebber of the Jackson County Public Library: "Peter Platter was evidently the 1st photographer in Seymour. He moved to Seymour in 1861 and a few years later he purchased a small building. He did paper hanging, photography and sold notions. In 1885, his business was as Platter & Sons - Books, notions, and photography." 1886: History of Jackson County, Indiana. Brant and Fuller, p. 710 PETER PLATTER, photographer at Seymour, is a native of Ripley County, this State, where he was born July 29, 1825, being a son of Henry and Emily (Redding) Platter, who were natives respectively of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Remaining on the farm until the age of nineteen, he then began to learn the trade of brick-laying and plastering, under the supervision of Seth Platt, remaining with him two years. After following his trade a few years longer, he in 1849 embarked in mercantile bus- iness at Aurora, which he carried on for some time with success; but he is now a photographic artist at Seymour, in partnership with his sons. Although his early schooling was meager, he has succeeded well in business, and done much to make the city where he resides what it is to-day in respect to its high standing. He is honest, upright, and enjoys the respect and esteem of all who know him. In his politics he is a Republican, and he has been honored with the office of postmaster of Seymour from 1868 to 1876; was deputy United States assessor of this district under Col. Tripp, of Vernon, during the administration of President Johnson; and he is a member of the I. O. O. F. Mr. Platter's marriage to Miss Sarah Jane McCracken, of Dearborn County, this State, occurred October 17, 1847. Their three children are Hartzell H., Herbert T. and Amelia W. [I do not know her source.] Seymour IN Daily Republican 23 Sept 1907 P1C1b Oldest Photographer: Some months ago Mr. Peter Platter attended a convention of photographers in Indianapolis and was the oldest photographer present and had been in the business longer than any other one there. The youngest was also hunted up and picture of each secured. Mr. Platter heard nothing more about it until a few days ago when he received a dozen as finely finished pictures as one would care to see. They are printed by electric light on Caliodia [or callodia? film scratched badly] carbon paper.
