OriginalSource: Richmond Palladium, May 15, 1856, p. 2: Go to Ohr's Daguerreian Gally, be wise in time, 'tis folly to delay, Save the shadow ere the substance fade away. [placed Nov. 29, 1855]

Richmond Palladium, June 19, 1856, p. 3: Now is the time! We learn that M. L. Ohr had determined to close out his stock and rooms, and, in consequence, will furnish pictures cheaper than ever before offered in this city. It is not worth our while to say one word in favor of his pictures-they commend themselves, and now is the time to get one of Mart's best pictures at a nominal price.

Richmond Palladium, May 7, 1857: Metropolitan Gallery, During a recent visit to Indianapolis we called in at the Metropolitan Daguerreian and Ambrotype Gallery, of which our friend Mart. L. Ohr, (formerly of this city) is proprietor. His rooms are handsomely furnished and the specimens of his work are unsurpassed in that or any other city. The Metropolitan is in the College Hall building, and is the Gallery of the Capital city. Success to Mart.

Ohr, College Hall 1857: Indianapolis Star, 9 May 1920 "When the Governor's residence on the circle was torn down in 1857 the Journal suggested that a daguerreotype be taken of the old residence and preserved as 'a memento of old times.' Indianapolis, continues the Journal, should have a historical society where everything of the kind of which we speak, together with dates and records of events pertaining to the early history of the city, would be preserved. There is much in the past connected with the settlement and growth of Indianapolis that would be exceedingly interesting to the present generation and to all that may follow it. Let us have a daguerreotype of the old building. It will be a preservative--the only one we can have--of an old landmark. Let us also have a historical society. Later the Journal announced that Mr. M. L. Ohr set his camera before it (the Governor's residence) yesterday and made a picture of the venerable pile of brick and mortar. This is as it should be. The old building will live in its shadow, although the form and substance will be gone." The Locomotive, 21 Aug. 1858, p. 3 Dags at Metropolitan Gallery, Ohr is making some of best dags in city. Prices are as low as at other establishments, Ohr's rms. Are few doors E. of the Wright House. 2 Oct. 1858, p. 2 M. L.Ohr at Metropolitan Gallery nearly opp. Odd Fellows Hall, carrying assortment of dag. Cases. Ohr's make of dags are equal, if not superior to Eastern daguerreotypists. He always keeps an eye not only to correct resemblance, but the permanency of all work executed by him. We now have some dags made at the Metropolitan 8 yrs ago that today look as bright and perfect as when made…the premium gallery of city. Ample arrangements made for great rush during State Fair. Ohr & talanted assitant F. B. Baily will spare no pains. Baby pictures hours are 9 am to 2 pm. 23 Oct. 1858, p. 2 Ohr of premium Metropolitan Gallery has received a beautiful variety of Dag. Cases. Ohr is only artist in the city making the genuine old style Daguerreotype… mentions richness of drapery, delicate blending of light and shade, gracefulness of position. Rms. In College Hall Bldg, few doors E. of Wright House, nearly opp. Odd Fellows' Hall. 22 Jan. 1859, p. 2 By this time Ohr evidently not involved in Metropolitan Art Gallery which is now operated by Bailey & Spurgin. Indianapolis Daily Citizen, Apr. 28, 1858, ad: For the best daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, photographs, hallotypes go to Ohr & Bailey at the Metropolitan Gallery in College Hall Building, E. Washington st., south side. All styles of pictures executed at this gallery in the most artistic manner, and as cheap as at any other establishment. Photographs, plain or colored in oil or water colors, from miniature size to full life size. Daguerreotypes of deceased persons copied, and enlarged to any size on paper of canvass, and colored by artists of unquestionable reputation. apr. 28-d2w. [ad last appeared Sept. 11, 1858] Indianapolis Daily Citizen, Apr. 28, 1858, p. 3: Fine pictures- account of visiting Ohr & Bailey's Metropolitan Gallery, spent 1/2 hour examining daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, photographs, and Hallotypes. Of the 2 last we found some of the finest that can be imagined. The photograph can be taken on paper or cards so as to be handled like an engraving, or be sent to a distance by letter. We are informed that engravings are actually copies, and books illustrated in the East, by that mode. The Hallotypes method produces likenesses that are superior to the finest miniatures in oil. Considerable money has been expended at this Gallery to perfect the arrangements, and we are glad to see that the efforts of the enterprising proprietors are appreciated by the public. Indianapolis Daily Citizen, May 4, 1858, p. 2: examined in Daguerrean Gallery of Messrs. Ohr & Bailey a life-size colored photograph of Andrew Wallace, Chief Fire Engineer, ordered by the Marion Fire Company. The picture was photographed on canvas by Mr. Bailey, and colored in oil by Porter, of Cincinnati. The subject is standing beside a table, hand on fireman's hat...at his right is representation of an open window, out of which is to be seen the "boys" running with the machine to a fire, the light and smoke of which are visible over row of business houses. The Capitol stands in middle ground... The price of such a work of art is $50. The Diary of Calvin Fletcher, v. VI, frontis and p. 279, 27 Dec. 1858: at 10 or 11 am met all the childin at Or's Dagarrotype offic and had our pictures taken. Bad cloudy day. Took 2 impressions a family groupe. The Degarotype taken by Baily & Spurgon. [see Diary, newspaper described the occasion] OriginalWorkerType: Studio owner/Partner PersonSexTypeID: 1 PersonColorTypeID: PersonStudioLocationID: 7721
