Daguerreotyping. A. Jervis, who is so well known in the city from the great number of correct and beautiful daguerreotype likenesses he has taken, has determined to make this his permanent place of residence. He has therefore secured, and fitted up expressly for his business, the large front room in Mr. King's new building, on the corner of Main Cross and West streets. This fine room, which is 94 ft. in length, is provided with a very large sky-light--a matter of great importrance in his business, especially in dark cloudy weather--thus affording advantages and facilities equal if not superior to those of any artist in his line in the country. Those who wish to procure likenesses of themselves or their friends can now call upon Mr. Jervis who will at all times, "rain or shine," be found ready, willing, and able to satisfy every taste.

Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), January 1, 1850, p. 2
Daguerreotypist. -- Those who wish to secure in this season of holidays, either for their own use or for the purpose of presentation, a fine daguerreotype likeness of themselves or friends, will find their most fastidious wishes gratified if they procure their pictures of Mr. A. Jervis, at his rooms in the new building on the corner of Main Cross and West streets. [Note: the date under the masthead on p. 1 is January 1, 1849; the date on p. 2 in January 1, 1850; and the digital issue date on NewspaperArchive is January 1, 1819. Based on other text, the correct year is likely 1850.]

Ad: Daguerreotype. A. Jervis, has got his splendid room ready at last, on the corner of West and Main Cross streets, with sky-lights, side-lights, dressing rooms, &c.--everything complete--to enable him to take likenesses more correctly than he has ever done before. Groups of 3, 5, 20, or even 30 persons can be taken at this complete daguerreotype Establishment. Particular attention paid to taking correct Likenesses of Children. Jan 1 d12

Ad: Madison Skylight Daguerreotype Rooms. The subscriber has received a new apparatus for making daguerreotypes. He can now take single pictures much larger than he has hitherto, and family groups of as many as 30 persons on the same plate; can copy daguerreotypes, paintings, crayons, & c.; take views of buildings; and likenesses of deceased persons, at their residence. He wishes it well understood that he will not leave his room to go to any part of the city and take a likeness of a deceased person for less than $8 for the first picture, and $2 for each and every additional picture, should more than one be wanted. The subscriber can say with truth that there is not at the present time in the United State a single room of the kind with better facilities for the business--as far as apparatus and arrangements are concerned, than this--and not an American Operator with more experience in the business. Price of a single picture at the room $2 and upwards, according to the size, style, and quality of the material. Terms, CASH. Room in Mr. King's new building, on the corner of Main Cross and West streets--entrance on main Cross. Alfred Jervis. Feb 9 d&wtf.

Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), March 13, 1850, p. 2
During the present bright sunshiny days those who would like to procure a fac simile of themselves or their friends should pay Mr. A. Jervis a visit in his "skylight daguerrean rooms." He is an adept in the art of taking likenesses.

Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), April 16, 1850, p. 3
Last summer it cost some families more to get a single likeness of a deceased friend or relative than it would have cost them to obtain, while living, likenesses of a whole family, if taken at my room, which is purposely prepared with a large skylight and all arrangements for the business. Room on the corner of Main Cross and West streets. Price of single picture $2.00 and upwards. "Be wise in time - 'tis folly to delay." A. Jervis. April 11 dtf

A Card. Having disposed of my Daguerrean Room to Mr. B. F. Dewey, it becomes my duty to return to the citizens of Madison and vicinity, and all others who have favored me with their support, my acknowledgments for the liberal patronage, and would recommend all who want good pictures to call on my successor, Mr. B. F. Dewey, who having had long experience, in the business, is an artist who I can cheerfully recommend as eminently worthy of your patronage. Alfred Jervis. [See adjacent message from Dewey.]

The undersigned is now fitting up the 3rd story room, over Mr. Lucas's shoe store, and is prepared to take Daguerreotype Portraits and Miniatures in a style which he thinks will give general satisfaction. He is furnishing the room with a view of making this city his permanent residence, consequently it is his interest as well as duty to do good and substantial work. It shall be his constant aim to have his pictures compare, in the neatness of finish, with the best in the country. No one is obliged to take a picture that does not please the person for whom it is intended. He will also copy Daguerreotypes, Paintings, Crayons, and Statuary, take views of Buildings, Landscapes, and Likenesses of Deceased Persons; likenesses set in cases, breastpins, lockets, bracelets, and finger rings. Instructions given in the Art. N.B. The earlier part of the day is preferable for taking likenesses. The public is invited to visit the Room. A. Jervis. Jan 16 d1m Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), February 23, 1849, p. 3 Ad: Daguerreotype Portraits and Miniatures taken in clear or cloudy weather, single or in groups, (either colored or otherwise,) by A. Jervis, Third story room, over Mr. Lucas's shoe store, Main Cross st., near the Telegraph Office, Madison, Indiana. Price $1.50 and upwards, according to size and quality of the material. Feb 23 dtf Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), April 16, 1849, p. 3 To the Editors of the Banner: Daguerreotype Pictures. -- Allow me, through the columns of your paper, to call the attention of our citizens to the likenesses which Mr. Jervis is now taking at his room on Main Cross street. In truthfulness of expression and delicacy of finish, they equal the work of the most skilful in the use of the pencil, while they possess the advantage of being true to nature. We congratulate our citizens on having in our city so excellent an artist in this department as Mr. J., as we have been so long bored with mere botches in the art, that, to get a good likeness, people were forced to go elsewhere. This necessity no longer exists, for I challenge the world to produce finer pictures than those taken by Mr. Jervis. Those who have any doubts on the subject are requested to examine those taken of Mr. Adams, J. R. Woodburn, and others; and I doubt not they will be convinced. Persons desirous of obtaining a beautiful likeness are advised to call upon Mr. J. and I fear not but what they will be well pleased. He intends making this his permanent residence and deserves the patronage of all admirers of this beautiful art. B. Madison Daily Banner (Madison, Indiana), September 11, 1849, p. 3 Ad: To all whom it may concern. As the subscribre may be obliged to leave Madison in a short time, therefore, this notice is to invite all persons having claims against him to present them for settlement; and those wishing Daguerrian Likenesses should apply now, while the weather is pleasant and the time of setting is short. The price of a good picture is $2, or for inferior ones $1 to $1.50. The quality of the material used governs the price. It is hoped no one will have occasion to regret delay in this matter.
