Death 'Mystery' Explained Away / Rooming House Keeper Asserts Recluse Suffered Bruises in Fall From Chair / No Evidence of Assault / Police and Coroner Find No "Foul Play" in Demise of Charles Brown.
Perplexing circumstances surrounding the death early yesterday of Charles Brown, 77 years old, a wealthy recluse, were explained away later in the day by Mrs. Curtis fish who keeps a rooming house at 811 N. Illinois Street, where Brown lived and which he owned. According to mrs. Fish bruises on the dead man's body, which prompted a report that he had been assaulted, were suffered in a fall from a heavy armchair last Saturday. Not entirely satisfied, however, that external causes had nothing to do with the man's death, Coroner Durham and Detectives Lowe and Ulery are conducting a further investigation. Brown for two years had lived in the front rooms of the rooming house. During the past ten days he had been very feeble, according to friends and neighbors. Last Sat. morning Mrs. Fish found him lying beneath his favorite armchair unable to move although he was conscious. He had bruises on his arms and hands and on the side of his head. The disappearance of a pocketbook belonging to Brown and containing $26 was one of the mysterious features of the case, but this was explained by the dead man's sister, who said that she had recovered the money. Autopsy showed death due to acute meningitis. [story continues about how Fish found Brown after he fell] Brown formerly was a photographer and occupied a building which he I said to have owned on Washingotn street opposite the State House. A brother, Albert Brown, 3034 N. Illinois street, has taken charge of the body.
