OriginalNotes: Early Photographers of Porter County, on blog "Porter County's Past: An Amateur Historian's Perspective, by Steve Shook, dated April 30, 2017, updated April 4, 2019
William Seth Bentley operated a studio on Main Street [Lincolnway] directly across from the county courthouse in the late 1880s and early 1890s. His photographs were imprinted W. S. Bentley. Bentley had moved away from Valparaiso by December 1892. William Seth Bentley was born in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, in December 1860, the son of Seth J. Bentley and Mary (Green) Bentley. The 1880 federal census for Kankakee Township, Jasper County, Indiana, indicates that William was residing with his parents, two brothers, and three sisters, and was working as a farmer. He married Lena May Bell Hawkins on February 28, 1891, at Valparaiso. William and Lena were living in Chicago by December 1892 when their son Marion was born there. The 1900 federal census for the Burton Precinct (Vashon Island) of King County, Washington, shows Bentley's occupation as a locomotive engineer. The 1930 federal census for the Burton Precinct of King County, Washington, lists William's occupation as a poultry farmer. William appears in the 1940 federal census for the Burton Precinct of King County, Washington, as an 80 year old widow. He died on January 2, 1949, at Everett, Snohomish County, Washington, at the age of 89 years.
