OriginalSource: JOHN CARBUTT, (Brey), p. 4 In 1858 or 1859 Carbutt worked in a photographic gallery in Indiana, probably as an assistant operator. While there he began experimenting with the use of colored filters. [Possibly Plymouth since he returned in 1863 to marry Mollie Ackerman of Plymouth.]

Hawes, Indiana State Gazetteer, 1858-59, p. 410 J. Carbutt, p. 320 J. Carbutt, Plymouth, photograph, ambrotype, melaineotype, and stereograph artist, Cosmopolitan Gallery
1860 IN Census, John Carbutt, Marshall Co., Plymouth, artist

The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, 11 Aug. 1859, p. 3 - That Excelsior Photographist--And Ambrotypist, John Carbutt, has recently re-arranged his fine picture gallery and made great additions thereto. In addition to his legitimate business, sun painting, Mr. C. does and is prepared to do all sorts of Italian, Grecian and other kinds of oil paintings. In his rooms are already many specimens of his skill in this line--such as the "Happy Family," "Niagara Falls," & co., all beautifully executed. Besides this he has a fine collection of lithographs, engravings, and portraits, comprising landscapes, splendid views of notable places, likenesses of eminent characters, and such other pictures as are usually found in first class country galleries. We think Mr. Carbutt excels as a photographer, and in all his works displays the skill fo a genuine artist. A visit to his gallery will repay many times its cost.

The Weekly Republican (Plymouth, Indiana), August 9, 1860, p. 3
Mr. J. Carbutt -- Our enterprising home artist, has completed a life-size photograph of Hon. Schuyler Colfax, which has been pronounced by all who have seen it a perfect likeness. The execution of the photograph is admirable, and it may be seen at Mr. Carbutt's gallery, together with smaller copies of the same. Mr. Carbutt is fast gaining an enviable reputation as one of the best artists in the State.

May be seen in Carbutt's gallery, together with smaller copies of the same. Mr. Carbutt is fast gaining an enviable reputation as one of the best artists in the State. Weekly Republican (Plymouth, Indiana), November 29, 1860, p. 3 We learn that Mr. John Carbutt, before leaving this place, took a likeness of our aged fellow-citizen, Mr. John Saebold, as he appeared sitting in his cabin door. Mr. C. will forward the likeness and a brief history of the old veteran's life to the proprietors of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper for the purpose of having them published in that journal. Plymouth Democrat, 20 Dec. 1860, p. 3 - A. J. Hassler, successor to J. Carbutt in the Daguerrean business, is, as we are glad to know, doing a paying business. We have seen some specimens of his work that are as good as the best. We could not have gotten a better substitute in the place of Mr. Carbutt. Weekly Republican (Plymouth, Ind), 13 June 1861, p. 3 - Mr. John Carbutt, formerly of this place, but now of Chicago, sent us an excellent photographic likeness of the late Senator Douglas, executed by himself.
