"A GAGE ARRASMITH, the leading photographer of Muncie, Indiana,was born near Eaton, Preble county, Ohio, February 17, 1859, sonof R. B. and M. J. (Lewis) Arrasmith, the former a native ofOhio and the latter of Kentucky, who were married in Putnamcounty, Ind, in 1848, and moved to Preble county, Ohio, in thesame year. In 1860 Mr. Arrasmith, Sr., changed his residence toMiami county, Indiana, where he engaged in farming until 1880.Since 1880 he has led a retired life, engaging a tenant to workhis farm. Mr. and Mrs Arrasmith, Sr., were Universalists inreligious convictions and in this belief Mrs. Arrasmith diedJuly 21, 1886, her remains being laid to rest in Miami county,Indiana They were the parents of seven children, as follows:Emma L., wife of John Parks, Peru, Indiana; Willie and Alonzo,deceased; Horace F., of White county, Indiana; Mary, wife of C.Strode, of Miami county, Indiana; A. Gage and L. Josephine, wifeof S. A. Holt, of London, Ohio. 

"A. G. Arrasmith was reared on the home farm and when buteighteen years of age engaged, as an apprentice for two years,with J. Wharton of Wabash, Indiana, in a photograph gallery. Forthe three following years he studied as a portrait artist andbecame thoroughly competent to undertake all classes of fine artwork. Until 1886 he led a roving life, traveling through manystates, mostly engaged in the practice of his chosen profession.Finally, deciding to locate, he selected Muncie as his place ofresidence, and purchased the gallery he is now in, andequipments, and has since been recognized as the leadingphotographer of Delaware county, Indiana Mr. Arrasmith's successhas been very marked and is due to the excellent quality of thework and to his faithfulness in the smallest detail. He beganwith very limited capital, but by his energy, the excellence ofhis work and his courteous manner, has placed his studio in thefront rank and has made it popular with all classes. "

"February 1, 1888, Mr. Arrasmith married Miss Ida M. Miller, ofHartford City, Indiana, who was born April 11, 1862, a daughterof Samuel and Margaret (Brue) Miller. One child has been born tothis union, a son, Glenn [Arrasmith]. Politically Mr. Arrasmithis a republican, and socially he is connected with I. O. O. F.lodge No. 74, and also of the Twa Twa tribe of Red Men.

Gage Arrasmith, photographer and portrait artist, 323 1/2 S. Walnut St., wife Ida. "The directory indicates that the Arrasmiths lived and had studio in same upstairs space, which would have been on the west side of Walnut St. It's likely that the building was one of several that were razed a few years ago." The 1900 city directory has a listing for Arrasmith Art Gallery as well as his photography business, both at the Walnut St. location.

The 3-story building has had a number of other uses over the years, including a stint as city police headquarters in the early 1920s while a new city hall was being built. The structure is now owned by Tim Foley and Ed Conatser, who are renovating it.
