Logansport Reporter, July 6, 1891, p. 4 Ad for Hull, The Photographer, 510 Broadway, mentions Aristotypes, the ever Fadeless Pictures Logansport Reporter, 9 Mar. 1892, p. 4 - article describes elegant pieces of crayon work lately accomplished at S. S. Hull's photograph studio. One is very handsome copy of a portrait of the late W. H. Johnson, and so lifelike is the expression, that a momentary glance excites both admiration and surprise. Another is crayon portrait of the late Theodore Minneman. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 28 Apr. 1890, p. 3 Art Creations. - The Recent Great Advancement Made in Photography. [long article, paraphrased; Pharos reporter had tour of Hull's Broadway St. art gallery] had revolving show case that stands on the sidewalk at the foot of the stairs leading to art gallery. "was ushered into a handsomely furnished room in the midst of a perfect sea of pictures of every style. Some of the larger ones hung upon the walls, some rested on easels, while several large show cases were filled with photographs of various sizes. There were pictures of the old, the middle-aged, the young and the sweet-faced babe, in family groups and individual pictures. Naturally frowning and unpleasant countenances are made to wear a smile, old maids appear as though they have discovered the fountain of youth; the recognized beauty is posing gracefully; spooney lovers are 'took' together--all productions of the gallery, and bear evidence of an artist's skill. Anything in the way of a picture is found here, from the life-size portrait in ink, crayon or water colors to a cabinet, promenade or card picture. Among the many specimens of life-sized work was a bust picture, in crayon, of Col. D. H. Chase, taken from a photograph, made of Logansport Canton I.O.O.F….In this, as well as all the others, there is a blending of lights and shadows on the features delicately traced, sharp in detail and developed in a clear relief, that give them a life-like and natural appearance. Perhaps the most remarkable of the list is a life-sized bust picture of the late Mrs. Geo. Yopst, executed in crayon. The features and expression were taken from a small tintype, while the hair dressing was taken from a cabinet photograph." [mentions other photos] "It was also noticed that special attention is given to making group pictures. We were shown several samples, and each are as sharp and distinct at the feet as at the head. Cabinet, panel, imperial and card pictures are particularly noticeable. Mr. Hull has met with decided success in children's pictures, judging from the many fine specimens on exhibition. His patience with the little ones is well-known, and he never fails to produce a correct likeness. . .Mr. Hull has had an experience of over thirty years at the business, and his reputation as a first-class artist is evidenced by the large trade he has built up since he located here. He belongs to the progressive class of artists, for he takes advantage of every new idea that is of benefit, and thus keeps paced with the improvements made in photography. . . . The operating room is supplied with superior instruments, back grounds, posing chairs and other accessories, and the other apartments are fitted with the latest improved and best facilities for executing work. A large and elegant line of frames and mats are kept on sale, the designs of which are unique and new." Logansport Reporter, 1 Oct. 1890, p. 5 Your Face - flowery article about him in a series of articles about local businesses. "The finest of pictures are obtained by him in all sorts of weather,--rain or shine. The change of atmosphere never changes the excellence of his work. The studio is a series of elegantly appointed rooms furnished in a regal manner and abounding in specimens of artistic skill. A specialty is made of crayon work and the general satisfaction it has given has created a great demand." Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 13 Oct. 1890, p. 4 - S. S. Hull says that albumen paper, used extensively by photographers, has advanced from $23 to $33, and none is made in this country. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 29 Oct. 1890, p. 10 - S. S. Hull, the expert photographer, is doing a new line of work in catching and transfering the shadows to a permanent background. The new process is styled the 'artistotype' and is as beautiful as it is high sounding. The process is a new one and Mr. Hull is the first photographer in the State to use it. By this process the photograph is given a fine, clear enamel finish, very pleasing and attractive. The new style of work is bound to be popular, as it is not only more beautiful, but more durable than the old. Logansport Reporter, 11 Nov. 1890, p. 1 - S. S. Hull, the phographer, is much more of an artist than he would let on to be when viewed in his dense disguise of gray whiskers. [describes pastel enlargment portrait of daughter of Will Duncan] Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 8 Sep. 1891, p. 13 - S. S. Hull, photographer, had a float in the Labor Day Demonstation parade in Logansport Logansport Reporter, 2 Oct. 1891, p. 6 - S. S. Hull - No man in the state of Indiana knows better how to take a picture than S. S. Hull, the artist, at 510 Broadway. [booster-like discussion of his skills] His studio is centrally located and is a series of elegantly furnished rooms, abounding in specimens of artistic skill. [discusses aristotypes "which remain the same all the time. Years of wear have not effect on them" note that he only introduced them in 1890] Logansport Reporter, 19 Dec. 1891, p. 2 - S. S. Hull, the patriarchal artists, has been so busy this month that ten new gray hairs are to be counted in his venerable beard. He has accomplished an unusual amount of crayone work for holiday gifts, having enlarged so many pictures that the walls of the studio are crowded. [continues] Logansport Reporter, 10 Apr 1893, p. 4 - S. S. Hull has contract for 25 8x10 in. views of grounds and buildings at Long Cliff to be exhibited at World's Fair. Logansport Reporter, 12 May 1893, p. 3 - Hull's Gallery Sold - The Popular Studio at 510 Broadway Changes Hands. - S. S. Hull who for several years has conducted at No. 510 Broadway, one of the most popular and successful photograph galleries in northern Indiana has decided to retire from business. In retiring he has taken care to see that the gallery passes into worthy hands and has succeeded in disposing of it to Mr. J. H. Roeder, of Chicago, an artist who is eminent in his profession and who will give the studio his personal supervision. Mr. Roeder and his family expect to remove here the latter part of next month. He has had 15 years experience in the business and will give the people of Logansport the benefit of the most approved metropolitan styles. Mr. Roeder is also an expert in India ink, crayon and water color portraits, which he will lmake a leading feature of his gallery. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 13 May 1893, p. 5 - A Business Change - S. S. Hull the veteran photographer has sold his photograph gallery to J. H. Roeder of Milwaukee, who took charge of the business yesterday morning.
