OriginalNotes: History of Daviess Co., KY..Interstate Publishing Co. 1883: Cornelius T. Cain: The leading photographer of Owensboro, west side of Fredericks, between third and fourth streets, is a native of Indiana, born in Danville, Hendricks Co., Indiana. When a child, he removed with his parents to Miami County, Indiana and attended the grade and high schools of Peru until seventeen, when he began to learn the art of photography. In 1868, he went to Louisville, Kentucky and in December 1873, located in Owensboro. He is not only the best artist in Owensboro, but is one of the leading photographers of the state. He has a first class studio and is prepared to do any kind of photography known to modern artists. His father was Cornelius, a native of Virginia, where he married Miss Anna Kiplinger, also a native of Virginia. His mother was a member of the Baptist Church and his father a member of the M. E. Church. They had a family of five sons and three daughters, of whom C. T. was the youngest. His great grandfather, Cornelius Cain was in the war of the Revolution and at one time owned the land where Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky now stands.

Cornelius Cain, b 1798 in Rockingham County, VA to Cornelius Cain and Sarah Hyatt. He was there reared and in that county married to Ann Kiblinger. Their children David H, John F, James M., Edwin, Sarah, Elizabeth and Cornelius were born in Va and IN. In 1837 they left their native home in the Old Dominion and came to Indiana settling first in Hendricks County, where they lived until 1844 when they moved to Miami County and made settlement in Pipe Creek Township. Here Cornelius Cain entered land, one hundred and sixty acres, all covered with unbroken forest not a stick having been cut off it and here he built his cabin and established his home in true pioneer style. In due time he cleared his land and made excellent improvements thereon. He died in 1872 leaving his children the heritage of a good name and a fair share of property. He was a man of some local prominence in his day. In 1852 he served as county commissioner of Miami County. Politically he was an old line Whig and later a Republican. He was a man of deep piety, a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church and one of the earliest Methodists of his township. He is buried not far from his former residence.

A Typo Gone - Our fellow citizen, T. M. Bitters, who for the last 8 or 9 years has been foreman in the Republican office, has severed his connection with that paper and bought out the interest of Mr. Tracy, in the photograph gallery of the late firm of Cain & Tracy. If industry, energy and uprightness will insure success, Mr. Bitters is bound to succeed. Though without experience in his new calling, yet he is a man of fine business capacity and whatever he does, is done thoroughly; and his fine tastes and mechanical acumen will soon be proficient at printing with the sunlight as with ink and types. We wish him every success. / Get your Gems and Photographs taken and Cain & Bitters' gallery -- where is the largest sky and side-light in the west. / No body doubts but T. C. Cain is one of the finest artists in the State, nor that T. M. Bitters treats his customers as kindly as any body. Every one in town and country are invited to call and see it. / [Also on page is long column "Spiritual Photographs" describing a framed photo on display in Cain & Bitters gallery of a group of mostly Peru citizens. "In the back ground of the picture can be plainly seen the outlines of two figures which were not in the group when taken. One is a female, standing. Her head and face, her bust, and one bare arm, and some of the drapery of her dress, are, though dimly, outlined, yet plainly visible. The other is the head and face of a man, bearing the appearance of a corpse--the blance of the figure concealed behind the other figures in the group. The artist, nor any of the grtoup, can in any way, account for the appearance of these figures--but they are there."
