-Both Bixler and his wife Eva were deaf according to this document. At the time the census was done, only their daughter Ruth had been born.

"Special to the Indianapolis Journal. North Manchester, Ind., Oct. 6 - A novel wedding ceremony took place last evening in the parlors of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Heeter here. Mr. Joseph Bixler and Miss Eva Heeter, both mutes, were united in marriage by Rev. D. A. Kuhn, his words being interpreted in the sign language as fast as spoken by Miss Mary Corwin, of Indianapolis. The groom is an expert engraver, of Elkhart, and the bridge the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Heeter, of this city."
