Obituary. Oscar W. Smith, Sr., 83, widely-known Columbus photographer died this afternoon at home 734 Seventh St. Had been ill for several years. Burial in Garland Brook cemetery. "Mr. Smith, among the state's early-day photographers, retired from his studio here May 1, 1950. The studio, located at 409 Fifth street, was purchased by Francis Galbraith who has continued its operation as the Smith studio." Mentions religious and club affiliations. Survivors: son Oscar W. Smith, Jr.; daughter Miss Frances Smith. Smith born March 12, 1870 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He was first in the buggy and sleigh manufacturing business as a finish painter. He became interested in photography as an amateur. Came to Columbus and opened his first studio here in Jully 1916. He had been engaged as professional photographer several years prior to coming here. First studio was in the second story of the building now occupied by American Security company. He then had a studio in the present Rio theater building before moving to the Rost building. He was son of the late H. C. Smith and Marianna DuLong Smith [Sic]. His wife was Mrs. Zoe D. Smith who died here March 25, 1941.

Leased for 5 years from F. J. Rembusch. Will improve and remodel. Smith's camera shop on Fifth, in property owned by Columbus Realty Company, was leased for a shoe store, resulting in the camera shop being forced to move. The Smith studio is at 421 1/2 Washington St. For several years Smith has needed more floor space for studio work; this will give him a large reception room and operating room of sufficient size to accommodate increased amount of scenery. Camera shop will be in the front part and will cater to amateur photographer; will do developing and printing. Will sell frames, camera supplies. In rear of room will be installed reception room, display room, dressing room, and operating room. Redecorating will begin at once and new studio hopes to open about September 1. Camera shop will move August 15. Electrically lighted studio is becoming popular and this will have large shielded arc lamp machine. Smith, who has been at present studio location for past five years, will visit several of the larger studios in the state in order to obtain suggestions. The other studio in the city is operated by S. R. Cornish.
