Turner, an early jeweler and photographer in Silver Lake, was remembered for something else: getting a divorce in an era when divorces were uncommon. Of Turner it was said that "The most lamentable fact of his life was marrying the well-known widow Catherine Callahan at Silver Lake, but now, honorably getting a divorce from her, is happy again." 1887 Biographical and Historical Record of Kosciusko Co., Ind. From ancestry.com p. 472 Orestes B. Turner b. July 28, 1841 with club feet in Crawford Co. PA to Solomon and Lucinda R. Turner; taught school and penmanship for several terms in Ohio. Came to Warsaw in May 1865 and taught several terms. Married Miss Susannah E. Gill; he moved to Silver Lake and engaged in jewelry business and later photography with which he afterward carried on the hotel business erecting and managing for some time the Silver Lake House where his 2 children were born (Ellis d. young and Bessie E. who keeps house for him). His wife d. Jan. 22, 1882. He built and improved a number of residences and other buildings in his village; served as recording steward of ME church, blackboard artist of Union Sabbath school. Was second village clerk of Silver Lake Inc. Strictly termperate in his habits, and is very proud to be able to say, truthfully, that he has never used tobacco in any form, nor any intoxicating liquor as a beverage. The most lamentable act of his life was marrying the well-known widow Catherine Callahan at Silver Lake, but now, honorably getting a divorce from her, is happy again. P. 726 Orestes B. Turner is resident photographer and has for many years been largely identified with the business interest of the village. He, during his more prosperous years, did as much for the improvement of Silver Lake as any man residing inside her limits. Kosc. Co. Marriage Records Orestes B. Turner m. Susanna E. Gill Nov. 11, 1866 m. Catharine Callahan, May 14, 1882 The Argos Reflector, 16 Dec. 1886, p. 4 - Mentone Gazette: O. B. Turner, of Silver Lake, dropped in upon us last Wed. evening. He informs us that he has secured a divorce from his wife, and has at last settled down to a quiet life. The Argos Reflector, 18 Sep 1890, p. 5 - Article about a mother-in-law's involvement with a separation in a Rochester home. "Last March Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith were married in Plymouth and moved to Rochester and opened a picture gallery in the Gould building. The husband was the junior of his bride by 15 years and, as she was the older, she was permitted to make the living. Joseph was contented and happy in the new relation but his mother wasn't and the first opportunity she had she stole over to Rochester and enticed Joseph to abandon her whose all he had promised to be--and hers only--and spirited him to Argos. A divorce case will be the result.--Sentinel. Mrs. Joseph Smith is better known to readers of the Reflector as Mrs. O. B. Turner, wife of the very loquacious photographer, who many moons ago took pictures here and entertained the public with sundry domestic entertainments of rather a roof-raising nature." The Argos Reflector, 23 June 1887, p. 5 - [from So. Whitley News] O. B. Turner, of Silver Lake, the only man that has ever existed that could demonstrate unconsciously by constant talking, that there is a possibility of perpetual motion, is dead. The Argos Reflector man will have to make a louder call if Turner assists in the demonstrations there on the 4th of July. 1880 Census, Silver Lake, Kosciusko Co. O. B. Turner, 38, b. The 'subject' will be recognized by the most of our readers: O. B. Turner, the photographer and tinker, is the prodigious monstrosity of the nineteen century. We met him the other day in a crowd of about twenty men, and no noise was there--no voice of man, nor beast, nor chirp of bird, nor breath of living thing--no animated sound broke on the heavenly calm, save that of Turner, the tinker. Heaven has deposited him on the earth with club-feet, such that his heels don't track; and to recompense the wrong, she left his tongue loose at both ends, gave each end tentacles, and rendered each tentacle capable of linguistic power. We never believed in perpetual motion until we came in contact with Turner, of Silver Lake.
