" James Lawrence, the big buck negro, who runs a cheap photo gallery down at Fourteenth avenue and Broadway, is up for trial In the Gary police court today as a result of charges made by small girls. If the allegations are true and if the black lived down south he would have been hanging to the nearest tree limb long ago. Six little girls, ranging from five to ten years old, are witnesses against the negro. Stories they told to the prosecuting attorney's staff reveal shocking conditions. A little while girl employed by Lawrence also told as to his character. Just why the police permitted a little white girl to work for the negro buck is not known, and why the fact that this act was not resented by white Americans in the neighborhood is another mystery." The Times (Munster, Indiana), August 30, 1912, p. 6 "Negroes in Gary are Immune." Much Indignation was caused in Gary yesterday when James Lawrence, alias "Jim Goins," the big negro buck, was turned loose in the Gary police court despite the shocking stories told about him by a half dozen little girls, ranging from 6 to 12 years old. A Judicial Farce. One angry father made an attempt to get to the black degenerate, but the police averted a scene. Instead of being tried on the serious charge that was made against him, Lawrence was arraigned on an "assault and battery" charge. One little tot only one was permitted to go on the stand, and after she got through the court ruled, following an application from the attorney for the state that the prisoner be dismissed. Some wag suggested that those responsible for this miscarriage of justice should have been little more humorous about it and tried the negro violator for high treason or arson. Police Are Angry. Gary police are indignant as a result of the freeing of the child despoiler. Captain Gus Newman, who caused Lawrence's arrest, declared that If he did get out of town at once that he would seek justice by going directly to the superior court. Lawrence, on the advice of his attorney, Clarence Bretsch, got out of town last night. "Why," declared Attorney David Boone of Hammond, "if this was my little girl involved in a case like this the courts would never get to try this negro." White Women In Peril. "The letting go of this negro buck" said a white woman spectator, "means that every woman and child in Gary is at the mercy of these black fiends. Why, where I come from a Judge, a prosecutor or an attorney wouldn't dare to pull oft a thing like this, and the negro would be strung to the nearest tree. This is the most outrageous thing I have ever seen In a police court." Police Are Downcast. Probably more angry than the fathers and mothers of the little ones who were lured Into Lawrence's photo-gallery at Fourteenth avenue and Broadway are the Gary police. "It doesn't do us any good to arrest negroes any more here," said an officer. "They know that they can go scot free in the court. And they don't get prose cuted either."
