Star Press (Muncie, Indiana), 26 Oct. 1924, p. 5 - Photographer Dies in Elwood. Elwood, Ind., Oct. 25 - William. H. Whittaker, 74, for a third of a century engaged in the photographic business here, was found dead in bed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Priest, 615 North Anderson street, where he had resided, this morning about 7 o'clock. He had been in failing health for some time, and had been at Martinsville and various hospitals for treatment. For some time he had been in the habit of using chloroform to induce sleep, and there is a possibility that he took too much of the drug last night. A bottle was found under his pillow. Dr. A. L. Mott is conducting an investigation. He was a member of family of 15 children, and came to Elwood in March, 1884, where he was in business until he retired a year ago on account of ill health. Burial in city cemetery.

OriginalSource: Elwood Daily Record, 20 Feb. 1901, p. 1 - Fire Narrowly Averted at Whittaker's Photograph Gallery. Only the precaution of having a man sleep there to see that the gas did not come on during the night prevented the destruction by fire of W. H. Whittaker's photograph gallery on North Anderson street last night. Barney Beigel, who was staying there as watchman, woke up about midnight and found the stove red hot and the gas roaring like a furnace. In a few minutes more the place would have been ablaze.

His new home will be completed in about 10 days. The old structure where he formerly conducted a gallery and which has become a land mark on the thoroughfare is being razed.
