Hamilton County Ledger (Noblesville, Indiana), Friday, April 5, 1907, p. 8
James B. Allison, of Fortville, died Monday at the age of seventy-six. For nearly forty years he conducted a photograph gallery in Fortville. He lived at Bloomington from 1860 to 1867, during which time he obtained photographs of many leading men, among them being Richard Proctor, the English astronomer, and Andrew Johnson, president of the United States. He was a class mate of Daniel W. Voorhees at Asbury University.

"Learned Photography in Old Daguerreotype Days." [Portrait of J. B. Allison] Special to The Indianapolis News. Fortville, Ind., November 6 - J. B. Allison, of this city, is probably the oldest service photographer in the State. He served his apprenticeship in the late 40's and became a full-fledged daguerreotyper in 1852, at Cincinnati. For many years, when daguerreotyping was in its infancy, he traveled from town to town, taking pictures of people, and during those years he posed some of the most famous men in the country. He met and heard Adelina Patti when he was but eleven years old. She was then traveling in this country with the Ole Bull troupe, which included Maurice Strachens, Ed Kimble and Scribner. In 1857 he located in Bloomington, and he lived there thirty years. While there he made the pictures of George F. Dunn, Judge Hughes, Daniel Voorhees, Alexander Campbell, Bishop Simpson and President Andrew Johnson. Allison attended old Asbury University, beginning in 1846, and there he was a fellow-student with Newton Booth, the grandfather of Booth Tarkington. He also attended the same school with Booth Tarkington's mother at Point Commerce, Ind., in 1843. Though he is now over seventy years of age, he still conducts a big business, and is one of the most up-to-date operators in eastern Indiana.
