OriginalNotes: Indianapolis News, July 7, 1939, p. 15
[Includes photo of Heyer, age 12.] He was an Indianapolis News newsboy from 1895 to 1898. "When I was a youngster, I was always interested in photography. One day I saw a little square camera displayed in a downtown show window. Well, every evening for a week I flattened my nose against that window pane, looking at that camera. I knew positively life was not worthwhile without it. Finally I saved up the price of it, $1, from my route collections and bought it. I remember it took one picture at a time on a plate, two inches by two inches." He bought some chemicals and by following intrsutions did his own developing and printing. He resolved that all his life he would stick to photography. Heyer, who today has charge of the photographic and blueprint department of the Dean Brothers Pump Works, was a newsboy [Indianapolis News] from 1895-1898. In 1898 he sold his route and the following year quit school to go to work as stock boy for the William H. Block Company. An ad which he read in The News said the Dean Brothers sought a boy to do photographic work and real blueprints--exactly the sort of work Heyer desired above all else. He accepted the job. In 1909 he went to the Stafford Engraving Company in the commercial art department, where he remained until 1918, and then he joined the Insley Manufacturing Company. In 1930 he went into business for himself. He set up a dark room on the back porch and did photographic and commercial art work. Six years later he went back to Dean Brothers. At the time of the article he lived at 1215 North Grant Avenue.
