OriginalNotes: Biographical and Historical Record of Jay and Blackford Counties, Indiana, Lewis Publishing Co, 1887, p. 506-506 - E. C. Thornton, minister of Orthodox Society of Friends, b. in Wayne Co, IN in 1832, lists parents. Was reared on father's farm, educated principally at the boarding school at Richmond, Indiana, which became known as Earlham College. Married in 1853 to Martha Bailey. No children of their own, but have an adopted son, Louis T. Brower. After his marriage Mr. Thornton taught school for several winters, then followed photography for 12 years, learning the art in Richmond. He carried on a gallery at Harveysburg 3 years, after which he traveled for a time. He then followed photography at Wilmington, Ohio, 4 years, then at Winchester, Ind. For a while, gradually engaging in other lines of business. Since 1880 has been engaged in ministerial work. In 1882 he and wife, also a minister, established Friends' church in Portland.
