Malin & Schwartz, artistic photographers of Portland, located in Reed & Mackenbach block, on Meridian street. J. S. Malin, the senior member of the firm, is a native of Jay County, born in Pike Township, Oct. 18, 1855, son of Eli Malin, early settler of township. When he was 16 his father moved to Portland. He attended the public schools and for a time was clerk in his father's store and from 1874 till 1878 was assistant postmaster under his father. He was teller in People's Bank, Portland 3 1/2 years, and held same position in Citizens Bank 1 1/2 yrs. In 1885 he bought a half interest in the photograph business of A. E. Forry, and May 7, 1886, Mr. Schwartz bought Mr. Forry's interest.

Schwartz became engaged in the photograph business at Portland in association with Mahlon, the photographer, and there discovered his life's work, an artistic vocation in which he has ever taken delight and in which he has scored a pronounced success. It was in 1884 that Mr. SCHWARTZ became thus engaged. Six years later he bought his partner's interest in the business, which meanwhile had grown to very gratifying proportions, and has ever since been engaged in business alone.
