NameMaiden: PersonHonorificTypeID: OriginalSource: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, 25 May 1911, p. 6, J. M. Steele has sold his photograph gallery in the Metsker block to John S. Edwards and he has already taken possission. Mr. Edwards is a young man from Boonville, Ind., and is an experienced photographer. The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, 21 March 1912, p. 5 The Edwards Studio has a sign in process of erection at the foot of the stairs leading to the gallery above, that when completed, will be an ornament to north Michigan street. The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, Thursday, 2 May 1912, p. 7, "Came Very Near Burning to Death," At nine o'clock Friday evening J. S. Edwards, the photographer in the Metsker building on Michigan street, was in his dark room developing. He had lighted a wood alcohol lamp under a bath that is used in his business, and in someway fire communicated from that to the furniture and stock in the room where he prints and does his work. He heard a cracking after while, but the music in the store below did not allow him to notice particularly, till he felt a heat coming throuogh his door, and throwing it open had just time to dash past the fire to the front rooms. The fire was among the light inflmable material stored in this back room, and burned fiercely. The alarm was given, and in a few minutes Chief Kuhn was forcing his men with a line of host up the stairway in front, while his assitant was carrying another lead of hose over the low buildings from the alley. The fire was soon over, being between two streams,. The damage to the photograph gallery is large, estpecially in the working part, and the stock rooms. Fire did not reach the front part, though the smoke rolled from the Michigan street windows in clouds, making it a nasty and ugly fire for the men to handle. Large water damage was done to the Zumbaugh Piano and Music store directly below the gallery, and to the Cigar store and pool rooms next south. [article continues about amount of water damage might have been mitigated if the firemen had a tank of chemicals]. The losses are all fairly well covered by insurance.
