Raised on farm, at age 18 commenced to take lessons in art of photography; 1861 opened small gallery in Rising Sun, afterward traveling through country with William Davis in portable photograph car. Fall of 1862 went with 19th Mich. Reg. as photographer, returned to Aurora 5 Nov. 1863 where he opened gallery, continued until 1865 when he sold out and moved to Cincinnati, remaining there 2 yrs. He returned to Aurora. He helped organize congregation of Christian Church of Aurora, elected elder in 1880 and trustee in 1882. Member of K. of H. One son Clifford D.
