Nearly 9 yrs ago [1878] commenced to learn photography, was to pay $20 and work 3 months, and pay own board. Instructor was a "Wandering Refugee," making cards, then all the rage, for 99 cts. and $1.25 per dozen. In about 2 wks. fire destroyed gallery and his rm. just opposite. In few wks. they were at work again, but rush for cheap work had died out.His "boss" sold gallery to him and, like others of his class, left the town very much in debt. After 2 yrs. had a spell of sickness and closed gallery for 3 months, at which time he was $400 in debt, with note payable coming due, property in the hands of sheriff, and landlord raising rent. He moved out, after squaring up, part of the time working in tent, then in a room, doing best he could with invalid wife and father. 2 yrs. later father died [note: his father William d. Jan. 18, 1885], then he built a ground floor gallery and residence combined, in business portion of the town, and now have one of cosiest and best galleries in this part of the country.
