Harold Davis, A resident of Louisville, KY H. Harold Davis, 71, a native of Croydon [Corydon?], IN, was chief photographer for the Courier-Journal and Louisville Times until his retirement. He was well known for his color photographs in the Courier-Journal's Sunday Magazine. While working in advertising, Davis became interested in color photography--then only being done in Europe and New York. In 1938 the newspaper sent him to New York to study at the Graphic Arts Institute. While there, he went to Washington, D.C., to take a color photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This picture, made with a borrowed camera, was the first color photograph of a president. Davis said that in his work, frustrations were very common. Once he spent four days in western Kentucky searching for Canadian geese. Just as he had found his subjects in a perfect lake setting, the sound of a passing jet sent the geese flying. Survivors include a son, H. Harold Davis, Jr.; a sister, Juanita Caskey, of Lamcaster, VA; and two grandchildren. (From the LOUISVILLE TIMES, 8-2-1980, and included in PENNINGTON PEDIGREES, Vol. 12-2, 1980, sent in by Juanita Caskey.)
