Jacob Harry Swayne (1838-1917) was primarily a portrait photographer. He came to Brookville from Richmond, Indiana in 1893. Swayne's photographic studio was upstairs in the building on the southwest corner of Sixth and Main Streets. He also took some photos of country scenes, such as the church and cemetery at St. Peter. He took photographs of the 1898 flood and and again in 1913. His photographs of the town's most devastating flood were used in the Brookville Flood Report 1913. One of his daughters, worked with him for a time when his work was marked "Swayne and Daughter." He, his wife and two daughters are buried in Maple Grove cemetery.
