OriginalNotes: Collection: A collection of Henley's photographs (P515 - 409 glass plates, 39 film negatives, 109 photographic postcards of the Carthage Centennial celebration in 1934, and 2 photographs) were donated to the Indiana Historical Society in 2010 by Mrs. Rheta Eversman of Jonesboro. They were found in the trunk of a car. According to IHS: Oran was a farmer in 1900, an electrician at the electric light company in Carthage from 1910 to 1920, and a carpenter at a lumber company by 1930. He never listed his occupation as photographer but, according to the Carthage Centennial pamphlet, he was the 1934 event’s official photographer, and he owned studios with his wife in Carthage and nearby Knightstown." The IHS collection guide states that the earliest confirmed date for an image is 1902, but some images could be earlier. Wife Jessie died in 1927 and he remarried; the 1940 census shows him as a photographer and he and his wife Pearl worked in his photography studio.

Herbert Oran Henley, 90, well-known Knightstown photographer, for many years, died at noon Sat. in his residence, 303 E. First Street, Carthage. Had been in failing health for 4 years and seriously ill for past year. Born June 14, 1873, 3 miles SW of Carthage and spent most of his life in the Carthage community. In 1899, he pioneered the Ripley Farmers Telephone Company, where received a franchise for the telephone system between Carthage and Morristown. Worked with the company until 1903 and then engaged as electrician until 1931. He established Henley Studio in Carthage in 1931, and in 1935 moved it to Knightwtown, where it is still in operation. He retired in 1953. Birthright member of Carthage Friends Church and was member of Kiwanis Club at Knightstown, State and National Societies of Photographers, and Daguerre Club of Indiana. First married to Jessie Kurtz, who died in 1927. In 1930 he married Pearl Watkins who survives. One son Kurtz of Miami Fla, and one niece. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Daily Republican, Rushville, Oct. 3, 1905, p. 4 - Oran Henley, son of Reuben Henley, who lives south of Carthage, will be married tomorrow to Miss Jessie Kurtz, of Knightstown. The young couple will take up their residence at Spiceland.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Oran Henley and members of the Indiana Photographers' Association wish to invite every interested photographer, his wife and employees to attend the regular monthly meeting of the association, to be held at the Henley Studio on Tuesday, October 8th, at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to select a new name for the association. The name formerly used has been released to the new state organization. An old-fashioned chicken dinner will be served to the members and guests from the dining room of the Murray Hotel. A business session and entertainment will follow. Come and hear unusual discussions of interest to the photographic profession.

Rogers, superintendent of Knightstown schools. Carthage HS teacher Bayard Baker entertained the society with humorous comments on "Facts and Fiction in the Photographic Gallery." Charles R. Butler, Indy, presented motion pictures (some in Kodachrome color) of travels in the Far North. President Robert Twente of Indy. Attendees: (almost all are Mr. and Mrs.) - Robert A. Twente, W. Frank Jones, E. A. Morris, Clem C. Voorhis, Joseph E. Craven, Mrs. June Carlon, C. C. Branson, M. A. Plowman; Mr. Carl Lieber of H. Lieber; Charles R. Butler all of Indianapolis; Morris W. Hirshburg of Crawfordsville; Hartwell Coons, Rushville; Bayard Baker, Miss Lillian Henley of Carthage; Mr. Ralph Lord, L. E. Rogers, Miss Lois Carwein and H. O. Henley, Knightstown.] "A word from Mr. Henley: We would like for the people of Knightstown to know that the Central Photographic Society is interested in them, and their town, as we are interested in them. The 40 members of the society are interested in bettering their profession, and in serving you more efficiently. We were proud of the reception given our friends Tues. night by our little city.
