They were found in the trunk of a car. According to IHS: Oran was a farmer in 1900, an electrician at the electric light company in Carthage from 1910 to 1920, and a carpenter at a lumber company by 1930. He never listed his occupation as photographer but, according to the Carthage Centennial pamphlet, he was the 1934 event’s official photographer, and he owned studios with his wife in Carthage and nearby Knightstown." The IHS collection guide states that the earliest confirmed date for an image is 1902, but some images could be earlier. Wife Jessie died in 1927 and he remarried; the 1940 census shows him as a photographer and he and his wife Pearl worked in his photography studio. Daily Reporter, Greenfield, Indiana, Feb. 11, 1964, p. 5 Herbert Oran Henley, 90, well-known Knightstown photographer, for many years, died at noon Sat. in his residence, 303 E. First Street, Carthage. Had been in failing health for 4 years and seriously ill for past year. Born June 14, 1873, 3 miles SW of Carthage and spent most of his life in the Carthage community. In 1899, he pioneered the Ripley Farmers Telephone Company, where received a franchise for the telephone system between Carthage and Morristown. Worked with the company until 1903 and then engaged as electrician until 1931. He established Henley Studio in Carthage in 1931, and in 1935 moved it to Knightwtown, where it is still in operation. He retired in 1953. Birthright member of Carthage Friends Church and was member of Kiwanis Club at Knightstown, State and National Societies of Photographers, and Daguerre Club of Indiana. First married to Jessie Kurtz, who died in 1927. In 1930 he married Pearl Watkins who survives. One son Kurtz of Miami Fla, and one niece. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.
