Well, it's taken 4 years, but I now have the answer to the Bitler photographer. He was in fact Casper Thiel Bitler (aka Charles T. Bitler), born in Berks Co, PA about 1826, a son of Samuel Bitler. This revelation came just yesterday when I opened a Civil War Pensioner file for a Maggie J Bitler. Apparently, Maggie (maiden name unknown) was married to an Adam M. Bistlin, who died in TN during the Civil War. She later met Bitler, a traveling photographer in Indiana, and lived with him unmarried in Indiana for a number of years and had two children by him: Nellie, who married a William H. Hill, and a son, who died at age 2 years. New Lisbon is listed as a place in the pension file, so I'm positive this is the same one. Initially unknown to Maggie, Bitler was still married to Sarah A. Hickman, living back in Darke Co, OH with 5 children. She later found out, but continued to live with Bitler under the pretense of being his wife to friends and acquaintances. They told daughter Nellie just prior to her marriage, but kept the fact they were not married private otherwise. Bitler never married Maggie, but left her to return to his wife and family around 1884, and Maggie went on to remarry 4 more husbands. I have not yet found when or where Casper T. Bitler died, or his wife Sarah (Hickman) Bitler, although it was likely in Darke Co, OH. Always more to discover!

Casper T. BITLER was born about 1826 in Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Tarlton, Saltcreek Twp., Pickaway Co., Ohio.2733 Sarah and Casper were married by Rev. M. Butler. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Saltcreek Twp., Pickaway Co., Ohio.2734  Spouse: Sarah HICKMAN. Casper T. BITLER and Sarah HICKMAN were married on 31 Dec 1847 in Pickaway Co., Ohio.1094 Children were: Mary S. BITLER, Charles C. BITLER, Therise BITLER, Ida BITLER, Isadore BITLER.
