J.B. HODSON, proprietor of sawmill and planing mill, Sylvania, is a native of Indiana, and was b. and raised in Hendricks Co, his father, Eli W. Hodson, being from Guilford Co, NC and his mother, Massie (BRAY) Hodson, being also from that state.  Mr. Hodson was b. April 4, 1840, and worked on the farm, and also at the mechanic's trade, until 16 years old, when he went to learn the carpenter's trade.  He served an apprenticeship of 3 years.  June 11, 1860, he was marr. to Miss Martha J. BENSON, and they have a family of 5 children:  Elizabeth, Sarah, Lydia Ellen, Ulysses, and Eva Luetta.  In Feb, 1865, he enlisted in the 148th Ind, and on his return from the army he worked on the farm until 1867, when he sold out and went to town, remaining there until 1872, engaged as silversmith and photographer.  In 1872 he came to Sylvania, where he worked as millwright and blacksmith, and in 1873 he bought the saw and planing mills which he now owns.  The mills are run by an engine of 20 horsepower and have a capacity of sawing 6,000 feet per day and of planing 8,000 feet.  He is doing a good business and also does a large business in watch and clock repairing and also in photographing.  Mr. Hodson is quite a mechanical genius, and can do good work at almost any trade.  He has been a member of the Methodist church since he was 16 years old, and is in politics strongly republican.
