The 1900 census has a J P Keeter, age 48, married 9 years (apparently 2nd wife), occupation Photographer, born in North Carolina, living at 458 Washington St (Marion county, Indiana, Enumeration District 95, sheet 7A, line 1). He also has a 20 year old daughter named Effie, born in Indiana, who lists her occupation as photographer. Rufus was a raised on a farm in Rutherford, and in 1860 was living with his parents and four siblings in Cathey’s Creek, NC. In 1870, he was living with his widowed mother and five siblings in Rutherford, NC, where he was a farm laborer. Like his brother Joseph Keeter, Rufus relocated to Indiana. In 1880, he was a farm hand in Guilford, Hendricks County, Indiana, and was living with his widowed mother and three siblings. In 1885 Rufus was working as moulder, but in 1886 he partnered with younger brother James Keeter (1862-1927) to form Keeter Brothers photography studio in Indianapolis, but this apparently only lasted for a year or two. On 8 January 1889, Rufus married Josephine Hatton (1865-1902); the couple does not appear to have had children. Rufus continued to work as a photographer in Indianapolis through 1904. Williams (1857-1891), and the couple would have at least three children--Effie, Iva, and Charles. In 1880, Joseph was farming in Washington, Hendricks County, but in 1882 he acquired the “Livery, Board, & Sale Stable” on 69 West Market Street in Indianapolis. The business was in a 60 1/2 by 175 foot, two-story building that could care for up to 35 horses at any one time. By circa 1888, Joseph and Samantha were running a grocery store. By circa 1890, Joseph had turned to photography and had a studio at 230 West Washington in Indianapolis. Following Samantha’s death, Joseph married Mollie Basore (1867-1944) on 11 July 1891. In the 1900 census, the family was living in Indianapolis, and Joseph was a photographer, Mollie was a dressmaker, daughter Effie was a photographer, Iva was a clerk in a confectionary, and Charlie was a store clerk. From around 1898 through 1909, Joseph had a studio at 420 West Washington Street. In 1910, he was listed as a city civil engineer inspector. In 1917, he was running a restaurant and in 1918 was running a boarding house. In 1923, he had a delicatessen in Indianapolis. Joseph P. Keeter passed away in 1928.
