Details from U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938, Page 12341.
Jeremiah Young began life near Huddersfield, Yorkshire county, England. His physical description at age 43: 5’, 8” tall, dark complexion, gray eyes, brown hair and a Protestant religion. Jeremiah enlisted in the Army during July of 1861 and served with Company F, 18th Regiment , Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After serving his term he re-enlisted during January, 1864, serving with the same outfit. This second enlistment proved to be a bad choice as he suffered gunshot wounds which disabled him and prompted his discharge from the Infantry in York, Pennsylvania. Even with his deafness and defective speech he was able to continue his occupation as a photographer listing his residence as Kokomo, Indiana. His nearest relative was his father, Henry Young who resided in Andersonville, Delaware county [sic: the original record states Franklin County), Indiana. His wife received a pension of $25. As his health deteriorated, he was forced into the “M. B. Hospital” where he died 10 January 1915 at 4:20 pm from chronic diarrhea with dementia. He owed 95 cents to the hospital store which was settled from money “found on person.” And there was a “Certified Dep. #6916 issued March 26, 1914 by The City National Bank of Lafayette, Ind. $75.00.” He was buried in the Home Cemetery, Jan. 12th, 1915, Grave #2231- Sec. 3, Row 11. An ignominious end to an interesting life.
