OriginalNotes: July 7, 1998 telephone conversation with woman (wife?) at Starkey's home (3914 Hillside Ave., Indianapolis, 545-0208): the 77 yr. old Starkey is in poor health and unable to talk about his career. He was a policeman for 37 years, later was a handwriting expert. Was a police photographer for several years--not very long. He sold all of his photographs to Barn Village antiques (Frank Flora) in Broad Ripple a couple of weeks ago. [J. Hostetler bought 13 of the images, including a portrait of Starkey with a Speed Graphic camera, and resold them to the Indiana Historical Society.] Birthdate was provided by this woman.

OriginalSource: July 1998: Joan Hostetler purchased at the Red Village Antique Shop in Indianapolis (and resold to the Ind. Hist. Soc.) 13 photographs by Starkey. The owner (Frank Flora) had purchased photos from Starkey, who is still living in Indianapolis. The group included commercial photos of restaurants, products, and a portrait of a photographer with a Speed Graphic camera [confirmed as Starkey through phone conversation with woman at Starkey's home; Starkey not available for interview because he was ill]. Other photos available at the shop were of performers (circus and singers) who came to town, and graphic murder scenes. The shop worker said that Starkey had been a police photographer.
