North Manchester Journal, July 26, 1888, p. 3
Arthur Rice has moved here from Milford and opened a photograph gallery in the building formerly occupied by his brother, Levi, on Mill Street.

North Manchester News-Journal, Aug. 28, 1952, p. 1: "Mr. Rice founded Rice's Studio in 1875. He started in business on Mill Street, and 65 years ago built the brick building at the corner of Walnut & Second streets." [NOTE: Arthur F would have been only age 8 in 1875; this likely refers to his brother Levi Rice]

State Gazetteer, p. 1668 "Early Photography in North Manchester," North Manchester Historical Society Newsletter, 1996 (Fall?), by Dr. L. Z. Bunker: Arthur Rice was a painstakingly careful workman. He spared no time or effort to get a good result. He must have had a way with children...He took pictures of newlyweds, graduating classes, soldiers going to WWI and II, groups at Manchester College and anyone who wanted their features recorded in time. His "Big Four" passenger train crossing the Eel River bridge was the perennial souvenir postcard of the community for many years but he did not often do panoramic cards. If he is the son of John M., the photographer, perhaps he started working for his father at that age.] ca. 1900 photo 4 June 1994: Rice's studio is today called "The Studio," selling books, gifts, jewelry, and health foods. It is on the SW cor. of Walnut and 2nd, probably 120 Walnut. It is across the st. from the Old Sheller Hotel. The original skylight is still visible, facing 2nd st. The owner, ? Brown, stated that when he bought the place in the 1970s he opened up the skylight. The darkroom is still in place and from it leads a stairway with a trapdoor to an attic storage room. They might still have some glass negatives that were found in the darkroom. Two cameras were bought by a friend of Brown's, but one was stolen. Brown may have given the negs to the N. Manchester Hist. Soc.; they weren't in very good condition. Rice bought the building in 1893 as one story studio, and built a 2nd story in 1896. Brown thinks that 2 generations of Rice's operated the studio. It closed in the 1950s. Rice's Art Studio - When you want the best photographs that can be procured in this part of the state, and at the lowest possible prices, you should visit the art studio of A.F. Rice, located at the corner of Walnut and Second streets, where he occupies his own premises, a one story brick structure built especially for his business. Mr. Rice has been identified with photography in North Manchester for nine years and has gained a reputation as an artist that is quite enviable. He makes photographs of all kinds, does enlarging, pastel and crayon work and picture framing of every description. He has a new process for finishing photographs that has become very popular with the public. It is known as the "platino" or dead finish, and the work is far more desirable than the gloss finish so long in vogue, although pictures will be finished in any style to suit patrons. Mr. Rice has long been engaged in the business of photography and his reputation as an artist is second to none in Northern Indiana. His work shows for itself and will bear the most critical examination. Give him a call when you want anything in his line. He can please you not only in quality of work but in prices as well.
