Small Drug Store (with photo) One of the land marks of the town of Bethlehem [renamed Carmel in 1874] was the L. J. Small drug store. The land where this building was erected was purchased from Alfred Brown by Thomas Cary in 1856. In the year 1867, Ruth Warren purchased the place from Thomas Carey, who in turn sold it to Eli Small in 1871. Eli Small first conducted a grocery business with his son, L. J. Small. The latter after teaching school for a few years, took up the study of medicine and became a practicing physician. He later gave up this practice to take over the management of the store. In 1880, Eli Small died. After his death a front was added to the store with large windows and outside stairway erected to the second floor. Here it was the L. J. Small stared a picture gallery. Making tin types was his specialty. From time to time the building was enlarged and the entire lower front occupied by a drug store. L. J. Small died May 31, 1926, after serving his community to the best of his ability for 54 years. -Edgar J. Small [sic. Edgar E. Small?] "Reminiscences of the long ago : being a historical sketch of the early settlement of Bethlehem, now Carmel and vicinity with an account of the Indians and of the doings and makeshifts of the early pioneers who have passed away with a partial list of their names and a list of the dead of Bethlehem-Carmel, an account of merchandising and other branches of business, accidents, suicides, shootings, fires, etc. up to l9ll" Newspapers: Our first newspaper, "The Carmel Signal," was first issued October 13th, 1889, by L. J. Patty and L. J. Small, but after a time Mr. Patty dropped out and it was edited and published by L. J. Small, and later by Ed E. Small, Vern Patty, George Bowen and Hal Small, each had charg-e of it, but the day of discontinuance arrived August 10th, 1893. After this another was published for a short time by "Shorty" from Tipton I think called "The Carmel Register." Later commenced the "Carmel Star" by Verne Patty, and now we have the "Carmel Standard," published by Roberts and Patty, which, let us hope, may be long" continued.
