Oct. 26, 1876, his father, John Hartsook was photographer for 44 yrs; his grandfather was daguerreotype artist and the 1st to open a studio in Virginia; 2 uncles were also successful photographers. He worked in his father's studio in Grant Co. until he moved to CA, 1898. He was also a rancher, with thousands of acres in Kern Co., CA; also owned 41 acres in Los Angleles near Lankershim, Vineland and San Fernando, Boulevard.
ST. LOUIS AND CANADIAN PHOTOGRAPHER, July 1905, p. 327, Items of Interest: mentions J. F. Hartsook the Santa Ana photographer, who has located in Santa Barbara, CA; has completed furnishing gallery in the Aiken block.

I have new information about J. Fred Hartsook who is in your list of early Grant Co., IN photographers.  You have him listed as John H. Hartsooks son, but according to all records I've found, John did not have a son, only a daughter, Florence, who worked here at the Marion Public Library.  However, John had a brother James who did have a son, John F. Hartsook.
