http://www.mrl.lib.in.us/history/dalbeys/background.htm [August 2003]
Edwin F. Dalbey and his son, Walter, were successful merchants in Richmond. Edwin owned a furniture store for many years, while Walter started his career working for the Richmond Palladium before coming to work for his father in the furniture business. Legend has it that Edwin received a camera in trade for some furniture, and the two men spent a great deal of time playing with it and learning the craft. By 1896, they had produced a huge number of images of people and places in Richmond, and they decided to compile a book which they called a "Souvenir." In March 1898, they purchased the studio of Rolland Stigleman at 826 Main Street and became full-time professional photographers. Edwin died in 1912, and Walter continued operating the business until the late 1920s when he retired. Walter died in 1946.
The first Souvenir was published by the Nicholson Printing and Manufacturing Company of Richmond who printed 3500 copies. Another smaller edition, sponsored by the Knollenberg Department Store, was published in 1904, but the more popular was the "Centennial Souvenir," published in 1906 to commemorate the anniversary of the arrival of the first white settler to the Whitewater Valley.

It is billed as a "Pictorial History of the City of Richmond" but the vast majority of the photographs are contemporary. The book opens with an eight-page textual description of the city, again, mostly contemporary in nature, but including some historical information. For the most part, all these books are commercials for the City of Richmond, and subtle advertising is evident in many locations.

Today, however, these books are invaluable documents that provide a glimpse into the daily life of a Midwestern city more than one hundred years ago. In their pages we can see what people wore, what they bought, and how they traveled. We can view buildings that no longer exist, and we can see buildings that remain in a new light. This online presentation concentrates on those structures that current residents of Richmond will recognize. ©Morrisson-Reeves Library, Richmond, Indiana U.S.A.

OriginalSource: Richmond Item, July 8, 1893, p. 4 - Ed Dalbey has in his possession some very interesting photographs of early Richmond, among them being a picture of the old volunteer fire department. The boys are all arrayed for Washington's birthday celebration and the picture was taken at the corner of what is now 8th and Main streets Feb. 22, 1866. Plainly visible are the faces of many prominent citizens. The photograph must be studied to be appreciated.

Richmond Item, Aug. 29, 1893, p. 4 - There is a picture in Dalbey & Son's show window, on north 8th street, that is attracting much attention. It is one of Ed's best photographs and is of Dave Hoover, standing in the midst of a melon patch with a monstrous melon in his arms. The picture is so natural that you can see Uncle David smile.

Richmond Item, September 11, 1893, p. 3 - Ed Dalbey has been experimenting lately with electric light photographs and has made some excellent views considering the difficulties to be surmounted in the art.

Richmond Item, October 13, 1893, p. 4 - In Dalbey's show window are some excellent views taken at the World's fair, by Mr. Dalbey. They are equal to any ever seen in Richmond.

Richmond Item, March 1, 1894, p. 4 - Ed Dalbey, whose reputation as an amateur photographer is becoming greater every day, will send a number of his finest views to an Eastern magazine that is offering prizes for best work. It is very probable that some of Mr. Dalbey's pictures will receive recognition.

Richmond Item, May 10, 1894, p. 4 - Ed Dalbey's pictures of the Masonic dedication ceremonies are very fine.

Richmond Item, November 11, 1895, p. 4 - The entire fire department was photographed this afternoon by Ed Dalbey. All of the hose wagons and the hook lined up in front of the city hall and the extension ladder was placed up against the building and laden with the boys.

Richmond Item, November 14, 1895, p. 3 - Ed Dalbey desires the pictures of all who have lived in this city or vicinity for 75 years as illustrations for his souvenir. In order to obtain them he asks such persons to meet him at the city buildings from 2-3 pm on Saturday. By patient inquiry he has already discovered 15 persons of this class.

Richmond Item, November 22, 1895, p. 1 - Business men who are getting out calendars for next year … should see the line of elegant half-tone engraving of local views collected by Ed F. Dalbey.

Richmond Item, April 6, 1896, p. 4 - Richgmond Souvenir. This book which is in course of preparation by E.. F. Dalbey & Son, will be, when completed, the only book of this kind that was ever published in this city, and one of th finest in the country. The work will be of half tone cuts exclusive, containing views of public buildings, school houses, churches, businesses, manufactories and private residences, street, park, bridge and historical views. Every citizen should take interest in the progress of this work. …

Richmond Item, June 6, 1896, p. 5 - article about Richmond Sourvenir. Will contain 200 pages with 300 half tone views, 3000 copies will be published.

Richmond Item, June 16, 1896, p. 2 - Ed Dalbey took a flashlight picture of the council last night, and will place the same in his souvenir.

Richmond Item, September 17, 1896, p. 8 - Photographer Ed Dalbey photographed John Likins and family in front of their residence on north 7th street to-day.

Richmond Item, October 15, 1896, p. 8 - "Pictorial History and Souvenir" of the city of Richmond by Ed F. Dalbey and his son Walter Dalbey issued today by Nicholson & Co's office.

Richmond Item, May 24, 1897, p. 8 - Ed Dalbey left his morning for Culver academy where he will take some pictures and deliver those which he took of the cadets when they were in this city attending the encampment.
