Hubbell, a "Daguerrean artist" made his appearance in 1843. Source: Ft. Wayne Sentinel, Nov. 4 or Dec. 2, 1843. Craig's Daguerreian Registry, p. 287: J. L. Hubbell, daguerreotypist, probably in Ft. Wayne, Ind. in the mid- to late 1840s, although he may have been an itinerant. The reference indicates he stayed at the American House on Columbia St., and may have known the legendary Johnny Appleseed. Source: Johnny Appleseed and His Time "An Historical Romance... Pershing, pp. 268-269) The Pictorial History of Fort Wayne, Indiana, v. 1, p. 370 The First Daguerreotypes The new photographic method of producing images on silver-coated metallic plates known as the daguerreotype, named for its discoverer, was introduced into Fort Wayne in 1843. A Mr. Keith was the first to open a studio. J. L. Hubbell, a second daguerreotype artist, came in the same year. [Article goes on to describe Colonel Tellagher (Tellega) as the first man to conduct a permanent "gallery," so these first two must have been transient.] OriginalWorkerType: PersonSexTypeID: PersonColorTypeID: PersonStudioLocationID: 5740
