New Albany Ledger-Tribune, Apr. 3, 1966: "Photos Tell Georgetown Story," by Katharine Wright, interview with his son, Jesse, ago 90: Albert spent lifetime recording the daily vital statistics of Georgetown's early citizens. Many of the photographs are marked "Albert Burkhart, Photographer. Groups, Residences, and All Kinds of Photo Work." Courier-Journal, 4 September 1966, "Burkhart Photos Captured History," by Bob Sculley: "Before the turn of the century, the late Albert Burkhart earned a reputation as one of Southern Indiana's top cameramen. Burkhart, who lived in the Floyd County hamlet of Georetown (pop. 643) left a legacy of more than 200 ethching-quality prints. Most of them were photographed in the period 1880-1900. Burkhart's son, 90-year-old Jesse Burkhart, also of Georgetown, takes care of his father's photo collection. Recently he loaned a number of pictures for display during Indiana's sesquicentennial year. Burkhart and his father both operated sawmills and grainmills. The father, however developed a growing interest in photography. Eventually, Albert Burkhart opened a photo studio in Georgetown. The elder Burkhart made it a practice always to carry a camera in his horse drawn buggy. As a result, he captured many memorable scenes ranging from haymaking in lush, humid fields to shots of three spectacular train wrecks. Some of his glass-print pictures have become smudged over the years. Others, though, clearly etch the finest details. Markings on leaves, the weave of thread in cloth, the wrinkles on work-burdened hands come across the years in a mass of detail to spell out the life and times of this camera-minded Hoosier historian." Courier-Journal, "Former Sawmill Operator Jesse Burkhart Lives in Home Built from Lumber He Cut," 13 December 1959, by Ed Moss Interview with Albert Moss's son, Jesse, age 84: He grew up in the mill industry and worked for his father Albert's mill in Georgetown. "Burkhart's father was also a photographer and he has pictures of some of the train wrecks." He has a photo of a head-on collision in Feb. 18, 1887 between passenger and freight train. [Perhaps this is indicates that Albert was working this early.] In June 2014 Heritage Photo & Research Services scanned about 120 glass negatives made by Albert Burkhart/Burkhardt for the New Albany-Floyd County Library. Most are from the Georgetown, Indiana area in Floyd County, Indiana, circa 1885-1915. OriginalWorkerType: PersonSexTypeID: PersonColorTypeID: PersonStudioLocationID: 1677
