Kokomo Daily Tribune, Dec. 15, 1895 reports suicide of Byron Reed, aged 67

Kokomo, A Pictorial History by Ned Booher, 1989, p. 23 photo of Byron Reed, one of most interesting and unusal characters to live in Kokomo, city's 1st musican, 1st artist, and 1st photographer. Organized city's 1st band and played for the 1st dance. His 2-story brick house built in 1870s and still stands at 537 W. Sycamore St. To prove a diamond is harder than glass he scratched "B. Reed" on front window glass with his ring--it still remains. Came to tragic end in 1895 committing suicide with revolver when he feared he had an incurable disease. Buried in secluded little cemetery on hillside owned by Reed family overlooking Deer Creek just SW of Miami, IN.

Crawfordsville Weekly Journal, 20 Dec 1895, p. 12 - Kokomo Photographer Suicides. Kokomo, Dec. 16 - Byron Reed, a pioneer photographer of this city, killed himself Sunday night because of ill health. He left this note: "My life is not worth the candle, hence I snuff it out. With full faith in immortality, I hop to meet you all in the sunny land. As the sun now sets, so sets my earthlly life." He was 67 years old.

From "A History of the Community Band in Kokomo, Indiana from Pre-1882 to 1982" by Karen Whitford
The first band leader in Kokomo was Byron Reed (1828-1896) who was from the village of Miami ten miles north of Kokomo. Described as a combination of a gypsy, poet and philosopher, Reed appeared also to be as "restless as an Arab" in his lifestyle, occasionally leaving his wife and daughter to live on the Great Plains with his friend William "Buffalo Bill" Cody and to try his luck as a "49-er" during the California Gold Rush. Reed's band was active during the Civil War years providing music for recruitment rallies, patriotic parades and union meetings.
