"Fort Wayne Man Claims First Letters Patent on the Kodak Principles in Photographic Art"
Includes head portrait of John R. Mote and image of "The Studio," a 2-story frame house with skylight. Long article summarized. John R. Mote, the photographer of Lakeside, came here in a photographer's car, making the journey across the country from Ohio; resided here 21 years; Before then he lived at Antwerp, Ohio. Came to America from England at age 14, finally located at Antwerp, where he was engaged in railroading and became assistant freight and passenger agent. Then became a storekeeper, conducting stores at Farmer's Center and Defiance, Ohio, and later purchased a livery stable at Antwerp. In order to secure the payment of a debt owing him he was led into purchasing a photographic gallery that a man was conducting on a canal boat. Becoming interested in it he learned the photographer's art and engaged in it as a business, later traveling over the country in a car in which he had his gallery, but continuing his residence at Antwerp.
[Much of the article details his inventions, including Mote's Combined Photographic Apparatus, patented in 1879, and later in 1883 with improvements at Mote's Combine.] "My letters patent antedate those of Eastman, but he beat me to it in the general introduction of his machine and its sale by his push and the improvements." Mote has the original model yet, made out of a cigar box and using ordinary spectacle glasses as lenses, it was a complete photographic gallery in itself, containing the camera, dark room chemicals, and everything pertaining to the production of the negatives and their development by either the wet or dry process. One of the improvements on the combine is the process of taking photos on any sort of material. "With it I can take pictures on common paper, glass, tin, wood, stone, or leather and also in bottles, plates, pans, etc. Yes, sir, I put the picture in the bottle, beneath the surface, using the same process in regard to plates, paperweights and in other novel ways." And samples of this work were shown the reporter. He refused $10,000 for the patent. The only territory sold was the state of Illinois--$600. Perfected invention at Antwerp, as he did others including sawmill dog, sliding gate, carpet stretcher. He handled the sale of his own inventions, by selling state rights. Advertised extensively in circulars, traveled through the country. Didn't not get rich on inventions. Mote is now nearly 70. His gallery in Lakeside is strewn with circulars. Article quotes a circular distributed for Mote's Combine.

Beatty, Directory of Fort Wayne Photographers 1843-1930 (Accessed December 8, 2020 : https://acpl-cms.wise.oclc.org/images/Documents/Gendocs/directoryoffortwaynephotographers.pdf) States John R. Mote was in business in Fort Wayne 1893-1910. Studio located on SW corner of Columbia Avenue and Tecumseh, which later became 188 Columbia Ave. He retired after that date. Fort Wayne Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana), February 15, 1913, p. 3 "Fort Wayne Man Claims First Letters Patent on the Kodak Principles in Photographic Art" Includes head portrait of John R. Mote and image of "The Studio," a 2-story frame house with skylight. John R. Mote was pioneer of Lakeside, now one of the best residence districts of Fort Wayne. "When in the spring of 1892 I built my present home at what is now the corner of Tecumseh and Columbia avenue, there were not more than a half dozen houses in Lakeside. It was not then a part of the city. We were out in the country. In 1891 he drove across the country from that town [Antwerp, Ohio] in the photographer's car to Fort Wayne and was stationed for a time on Calhoun street, near Montgomery. "I like it here in Fort Wayne and made up my mind to make it my home. Just about that time the lots over in Lakeside were on the market and I purchased the one I now own and moved my photographer's car on it. That same year I put up a building for a gallery and also built a residence. In the latter my wife and I have since lived. We are Lakeside pioneers. The old photographer's car is a part of my present gallery building." The photograph gallery of Mr. Mote in Lakeside fronts on Tecumseh street. It is well equipped and in it Mr. Mote conducted business for some years, but of late his has been a somewhat retired life. And yet he keeps busy at perfecting some of his inventions, particularly those along the photographic line. Fort Wayne News, Jan. 28, 1895, p. 2 The police this forenoon called at a Lakeside residence in the rear of the photograph gallery on Delta Lake and ordered the occupants of the house, two gay women, to leave the quiet suburb at once. The girls agreed to comply with the order. Mr. Mote, who is a photographer, and owns the residence, was one of the complaining neighbors.
