Davis, Death Notice, Daily Ledger, New Albany, Indiana, [6 December 1917], [page not cited] The funeral services for Greer W. Davis will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. H. Conner, 313 East Elm Street. Greer W. Davis, a well known resident of New Albany, was found dead Tuesday afternoon at his home, 323 Bank Street. Death being due, it is believed, to an attack of the heart. Mr. Davis had been complaining for the past week but his condition was not considered serious. He was able to be about and was seen on the street as late as Monday night. When Mrs. J. H. Conner, a sister of Mr. Davis, called at his home Tuesday, she found him seated in a chair with a newspaper in his hands, apparently asleep. A further investigation disclosed that he was dead, expiration having taken place not a great length of time before Mrs. Conner's arrival, as the body was still warm. Mr. Davis was 75 years old and was unmarried. He was a native of Jackson, Missouri, but removed to this city about 50 years ago where he lived the rest of his life. He was a brother of the late Major J. G. Davis, of the War Between the States who was a prominent soldier and also a brother of the late F. A. W. Davis, who up until a few years ago was President of the Indianapolis Water Company. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the naval and military service of the Civil War and was especially wont to tell of his service in connection with the Mississippi Squadron. He was a member of the naval veterans association of Louisville and Cincinnati, and it was then that he became interested in calcium light. He prepared a lime pencil to be used in connection with the particular light, which he manufactured until the time of his death, and which he sold over the whole country. From this source, he enjoyed a comfortable income. He had an inventive intellect and was always interested in research work. Mr. Davis is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. F. Mason and Mrs. J. H. Conner, of New Albany.(671) OriginalWorkerTypes: OriginalProcesses: OriginalFormats: OriginalOccupation: OriginalCombination: OriginalSources: SeeAlsoPhotographer: SeeAlsoStudio: CreatedDate: 10/30/2021 5:47:20 PM CreatedBy: sa LastModifiedDate: 10/30/2021 5:47:20 PM ModifiedBy:
