OriginalNotes: E-mail from Bonney Bielen, 210 West Grant Street #315, Minneapolis, MN 55403: She was Ashby's great niece. She provided dates and this information about his collection:
He was a good friend of Captain C.W. Stoll of Louisville, KY (who I believe is still alive). Captain Stoll was associated with the river boat the Steamer Belle of Louisville,
and he regarded Hurley as a very fine river photographer. Hurley had an extensive collection of river photographs (both his own and historical) and I believe Captain Stoll purchased some of these a the time of Hurley's death. A man named Roy Barkhau also acquired
a number of the photographs in Hurley's collection...both of these men are (were? I don't know if they are still alive) steamboat aficionados in the Ohio River area. I am not certain if this is helpful to you. The information I have re:the Hurley Ashby collection comes from Mr. Louis DeCar of Madison, IN, with whom I was in correspondence in the early 1990s.

At any rate, the photos I have that were taken by Hurley Ashby include early steamboat and river photographs (taken between 1915 and 1920), some family photographs (both studio portraits and more informal photographs, very beautifully composed); photographs of
Madison, IN and Milton, KY (again 1915-1920).

My mother, who knew Hurley, says he was also a painter and worked in the theater designing backdrops and sets. There is a rumor he worked in Hollywood, designing sets. I don't know if this is true, as he lived in Indianapolis most of his life.

Find A Grave #17645936: W. Hurley Ashby, b. 1893, d. Mar. 1950, buried 27 Mar 1950
