OriginalNotes: "Ben Winans's Brookville," by Donald L. Dunaway, Traces, Summer 1997, pp. 34-37: Winans attended school in old Franklin County Seminary building. At age fifteen he left school and went to work in the office of the Brookville American--which began his lifelong career in printing. In 1891 he opened a shop of his own, which he continued to operate until he became incapacitated in 1947.

Collection: over 3,000 glass negatives acquired by Eugene Bock from Winans's stepson in 1956. In late 1980s the collection acquired by Donald Dunaway, of Brookville. The Indiana Historical Society has approximately 1,000 Winans photographs, acquired from Winans in 1938 (1902-1911 views of log cabins and covered bridges in Franklin Co.); In 1964 Bock printed for the Society a set of 400 photographs from the negatives of Winans and John W. Baker. In 1973 the IHS received the Virgil Davis Collection, which contains more than 600 vintage Winans photographs.

The Brookville Democrat, 21 Feb. 1907, p. 1 bio of Will C. Winans, brother of B. F. Winans - W. C. Winans emigrated from Grant County, KY., in company with his parents, King D. and Margaret E. Winans, who formed a company of 21 families, the date being October 26, 1851. Mr. and Mrs. Winans settled in Brookville" [The other families went farther west. King D. Winans was a carpenter and joiner. W. C. is one of 12 children.] "Ben F. is happily married and is the owner of a neat and commodious job printing office in Brookville, and has a photographer's camera. When not busily engaged with indoor work he goes out on our roamantic hills and along the Whitewater, and takes landscape views of the picturesque scenery."
