Text about Peter Fishe Reed, poet, painter, and art critic. He was b. in Boston May 5, 1817. Came to Indiana a located in old Vernon about 1850. In 1860 came to Indianapolis to live and opened studio in Ray's Building, where he had classes in drawing, which he maintained until he was asked to chair English and teach painting and drawing in White Water College in Centervill. Left in September 1861 to accept new position. Later went to Chicago to live and devote entire time to his art. Called "the father of art" in Chicago.

OriginalSource: April 20, 1861: Charley Purcell is First Lieutenant in the Artillery, but his wife will carry on the Gallery. The operator is the gentlemanly Josie Ried, a young man well qualified in the art, and who will make you look good natured and then "strike the pictur" while the life is in your countenance. It is commenable [sic] in Mrs. Purcell to try and support herself during her husband's absence, and we hope the people will patronize her as she deserves.

Pantheon Picture Gallery - James H. Reed, Artist - We would advise alll who want to see life-like portraits, to call at the Pantheon portrait gallery, Pennsylvania street, next to the Postoffice. These likenesses are very striking. We notice also a splendid little picture called the Nebular Ambrotype, which is the finest Ambrotype we ever saw. Reed's landscapes, portraits, fruit pieces, & c., on exhibition there are well worth a visit.

Among all the fancy styles of likeness the Nebular Ambrotype, made at the Pantheon, is the most beautiful, fine-toned and beautiful. Every one who has a streak of the classic in them should have one. There is no small picture that equals them in beauty. The Painted Photographs are bold, brilliant, and as a likeness very striking. There can be no better Pictures made than one made at this gallery. It is in the Aetna Building, on Pennsylvania street.

That beautiful nebular ambrotype at the Pantheon is the finest picture of the kind we have ever seen, very classic, besides being a fine likeness. We notice several of our city poets and artists there. The painted photographs are also very fine. There are several of Reed's landscapes there, and a fruit piece that looks very lucious, about as true to nature as anything we ever saw. On the whole the Pantheon is a very stylist little gallery and well worth a visit. Pennsylvania street, at the Aetna Building.
