OriginalSource: Typewritten report by his son David M. Meacham, June 1993: Photography became Oscar's hobby. He built a studio, or "gallery", behind the house [7735 Swails St., then Washington St., built in about October 1902]. That gallery was later incorporated into the dwelling that was built there for his sister, Sarah Golden, and their mother on their lot at 11145 McGregor Road. Oscar attended photography school and conventions at Winona Lake. He produced many portraits mounted in folders and on cards. Signed and dated them, e.g. by Meacham '03, in white ink. Took pictures of people, places, and things using his studio camera mounted on a folding tripod. He took pictures of himself, snapping the shutter by pulling a black thread attached. Took a trick picture showing himself sitting at table listening to himself. Traveled around the countryside on his bicycle with his camera, taking pictures of people lying in their coffins. Edna [his 2nd wife] told of learning to develop Oscar's glass plate photographic negatives in the dark room in the corner of the cellar. "Running water" was provided from a wooden barrel in the corner of the kitchen with a rubber hose through a hole in the floor."
