OriginalNotes: Magic Middletown, by Dwight Hoover (IU Press, Bloomington, 1986), introduction: Roger Pelham, then living in Muncie (late 1960s or 1970s) came into possession of about 1,600 of Swift's glass and film negatives. He moved and took them to Trotwood, OH. Most of Pelham's negatives are now owned by the Center for Middletown Studies and date from 1922 to 1930.

W.A. Swift Collection
W.A. Swift was born in Metamora, Indiana, on August 17, 1877. He moved to Muncie in 1918 and was working for the Delaware Engraving Company as a photographer by 1923. He was a commercial photographer in Muncie through the 1940s. The Swift collection documents both the ordinary and extraordinary events of daily life in Muncie, primarily in the 1920s. In these images, we have a visual history of Muncie during the time period when the Lynds first came to study "Middletown." There are over 1000 photographs in the collection. The photographs in this collection are available for viewing on the Middletown Digital Archives web page.

The Coburn Photo and Film Company had six camera men at work taking motion pictures of the parade from start to finish, and more than 12,000 feet of film were taken. W. A. Swift, with a studio in the When Building, took large numbers of panoramic views, some of which are reproduced in The Star today. The Coburn films will be preserved under the direction of the Indiana Historical Commission for future exhibitions.
