Beeks OriginalNotes: Biographical Souvenir of Georgia and Florida by FA Battey & Co., 1889-Transcribed by LA Bauer BEEKS, J.T. - J. T. BEEKS was born in Union County, Ind., June 27, 1836, and is the son of G. C. and C. C. (Stagg) Beeks. G. C. Beeks was born in Harper’s Ferry, Va., in 1809, was engaged in the ministry of the Methodist Church ten years, afterwards was compelled to give it up on account of throat trouble, and practiced medicine until 1863. From this date he was quite an invalid, and his death was caused by a stroke of paralysis in 1878, though he had been a sufferer for years. He was sent with his half-brother, Rev. B. T. Crouch, by the Virginia conference, to Kentucky, and subsequently to Indiana, where he did most of his preaching. He graduated from the Louisville Medical College in 1848. He was frequently requested to become a candidate for different offices, but always declined. He was a son of James and Cornelia (Crisfield) Beeks, the former a planter and a native of Maryland and a son of James Beeks, of England. Mrs. C. C. Beeks, the mother of our subject, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1814, and is the daughter of Isaac Stagg, an architect and a native of New York. She is the mother of four children, of whom our subject is the eldest. The names of these children are: J. T., James C., William L. and Edward A. J. T. Beeks was educated in the common schools and spent two years in Asbury University. At the age of sixteen he entered a dry goods store as a salesman, where he remained eight years. Choosing the law as a profession, he commenced reading law with Judge S. P. McMillan and his brother, James C. Beeks, of Greenville, Tenn., was admitted to the bar in 1867 and began practice in the above city. The same year he was appointed assistant prosecutor for the first district of Tennessee. In 1868 he was so injured by a pile of lumber falling on him that he was compelled to give up the law. After visiting several cities in search of relief and after suffering fifteen years, he was compelled to have his left leg amputated above the knee in 1883, in Orlando, Fla. He located in Orange County, Fla., in 1875. In 1878 he was called upon by a committee of Orange County’s best citizens and solicitated to become a candidate and was elected in 1878 and is the present incumbent of that office. He was married June 27, 1867, to C. F. Vance, daughter of David G. and Mary (McCorkle) Vance, of Greenville, Tenn. To this marriage have been born two daughters, viz: M. C. and F. V.
